Why this work matters

Teachers are not only trying to determine whether students are getting Algebra answers wrong — they are trying to understand why. Incorrect responses can reveal deeper misconceptions that compound over time if they go unaddressed.

This initiative aims to move beyond simple right-or-wrong grading and build models that recognise student reasoning patterns at scale.

  • Equation balance errors Students may not understand that both sides of an equation must remain equal when operations are applied.
  • Variable confusionStudents may misunderstand what letters such as x, n, or a represent across different problem contexts.
  • Function relationship gapsStudents may struggle to see how one quantity changes in relation to another.

Eligibility & participation requirements

The program is designed for eligible US schools serving students who have recently received Algebra instruction.

  • Minimum school size: Schools must have at least 500 students.
  • US schools only: This research partnership is currently open to schools in the United States.
